Job Summary
The Accompanist & Assistant Choral Director is responsible for providing accompaniment, vocal coaching, musical arrangements, and leadership for PMO ensembles, specialty groups and soloists. This position will assist with coordinating student retention and recruitment efforts, participate in alumni and donor relations activities, determining and setting rehearsal schedules, and special projects as needed. In this role, you may serve as ensemble director for select ensembles.
Responsibilities:
- Arrange instrumental and vocal materials for ensembles, specialty groups and soloists
- Direct specialty group and alternate rehearsals
- As needed, direct rehearsals and performances while accompanying
- Assist with creative design and development of the Purdue Christmas Show
- Assist with student retention and recruitment efforts
- Assist with and participate in alumni and donor relations activities
- Assist with determining and setting rehearsal schedules and coordinating auditions
- Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of PMO
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in music, music education, or related field
- 1 year of experience in directing, arranging, accompanying, vocal coaching and/or professional entertainment
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted (Associate's degree + 3 years; HS diploma/GED + 5 years)
- Excellent piano/accompanying and vocal coaching skills
- Ability to produce, teach and play a broad range of musical styles including jazz, classical, pop, and musical theatre
- Ability to read open scores, play chord changes and appropriately stylize and improvise related piano parts
- High level of communication skills necessary
- Ability to handle multiple/varied tasks and meet deadlines
- Must be able to travel and be available for weekends and evening engagements
Preferred:
- 2 years of experience in directing, arranging, accompanying, vocal coaching and/or professional entertainment
- Familiarity with music writing software Sibelius or Finale
