iSing Silicon Valley, an internationally recognized choral organization that serves more than 300 girls who love to sing, welcomes nominations and applications for the newly created position of Executive Director.
Founded in 2013 by Artistic Directors Jennah Delp Somers and Shane Troll, iSing serves a diverse population of more than 300 girls in first to twelfth grades, guiding them to discover the power of their voices as they reach for artistic excellence. iSing’s Palo Alto, CA-based program is comprised of five choruses, including four training choruses and an elite performing, recording, and touring ensemble. iSing has also piloted and plans to deepen and expand iSing@RWC, a Neighborhood Chorus program offering the iSing experience to girls from schools that receive Title 1 funding in Redwood City, CA without barriers of cost or transportation.
At iSing, girls learn and grow together, engaged “whole self in.” Through a wide variety of educational and musical opportunities, they realize their individual and collective strengths and develop a deep respect for differing backgrounds and perspectives. They see first-hand that bringing a diversity of unique voices together can lead to rich and far-reaching results.
iSing Silicon Valley champions girls as artists, offering them rigorous musical and vocal training, and opportunities to perform commissioned works, collaborate with acclaimed artists, produce recordings, and tour the world. Celebrated for the exquisite vocal blend and joyous singing of its choirs, iSing has built a deeply committed musical community in the Bay Area and has earned recognition on national and international stages. Recent awards include the Grand Prize in the 8th International Robert Schumann Choral Competition (2018) and Chorus America’s Dale Warland Singers Commission Award (2018).
iSing’s Commissioning Initiative reflects the organization’s dedication to adding great new works to the repertoire for treble voices. To date, iSing girls have brought to life twenty works commissioned exclusively for them to sing, by composers such as Adam Schoenberg, Daniel Wohl, and musical artist PinkZebra. Five iSing commissions are featured on iSing’s recently released debut album Here I Stand, which was praised by Choral Journal as “a monumental contribution to the art of the treble choir.” iSing has also enjoyed collaborations with musical pioneer Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble, operatic soprano Angel Blue, and the world-renowned vocal ensembles Voces8 and Cappella SF.
iSing is governed by an eight-member Board of Directors and has an annual operating budget of $900,000. Artistic Directors Jennah Delp Somers and Shane Troll lead iSing’s artistic team and report to the Board of Directors. As iSing’s chief administrator, the new Executive Director will lead the organization’s management team and will report to the Board of Directors through the Chair.
Working closely with Board and the Artistic Directors, the ED will provide the day-to-day leadership and overall management that will enable iSing to realize its vision, fulfill its mission, and achieve its goals for artistic and organizational success.
The Executive Director will be responsible and accountable for the business operations of iSing. Consistent with the strategic priorities established by the Board, the ED will develop annual budgets, timelines, and operating plans that build iSing’s capacity to adapt and grow; maintain financial sustainability; pursue excellence through expanded artistic and educational programs; and heighten iSing’s visibility in the Bay Area, nationally, and internationally.
The Executive Director will provide impetus and support to the work of the Board to ensure good governance, strengthen the Board’s fundraising ability, and develop a more diverse and inclusive Board.
The Executive Director will ensure effective communication with all iSing stakeholders, including Board members, staff, singers, parents, and patrons.
The Executive Director will take a leadership role in fundraising from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government. This includes the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of donors and the stewardship of gifts for the annual fund, concert and program sponsorships, endowment, and special projects.
The Executive Director will engage, motivate, supervise, and evaluate a high achieving, dedicated administrative staff. The ED will ensure that staff members have the tools, training, mentoring, and professional development they need in order to be successful.
The Executive Director will partner with the Artistic Directors in seeking out performance opportunities that provide enhanced artistic, educational, and cultural experiences for iSing members and expand the organization’s reach in the community. The ED will serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the value and importance of choral singing in general, and the mission iSing Silicon Valley in particular. The ED will make a home in the area and be an active participant in the life of the Silicon Valley community.
The ideal candidate will be an inspiring leader and skilled manager with a passion for choral music and a firm belief in the power of choral singing to transform young lives. The successful candidate will fully embrace the vision of iSing Silicon Valley and work in partnership with the Board and Co-Artistic Directors to realize that vision, achieve iSing’s mission, and ensure organizational success.
The successful candidate will have outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with iSing’s multiple constituencies, including artists, staff, audiences, individual and institutional donors, board members, parents, the media, and the Silicon Valley community at large. Experience working with young people in a performing arts or arts education environment is preferred.
The successful candidate will have a deep personal commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion. The candidate will have the demonstrated ability to foster a welcoming environment for a diverse community of young singers, their families, and their friends, and to promote a sense of belonging in everyone who participates in iSing’s programs. Interest in and understanding of the cultures and languages of the California Bay Area populations will be a valuable asset.
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic fundraiser with a track record of success in generating support from a wide variety of individual and institutional donors. The candidate will be prepared to devote significant time and attention to the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and recognition of donors who provide annual support as well as funding for special projects such as commissioning, touring, and recording. The candidate will have the vision and imagination to engage the unique Silicon Valley tech community in support of iSing’s mission and activities.
The successful candidate will be a skilled administrator, financial manager, and project manager who is adept at building and monitoring budgets and operating plans. The candidate will have excellent written and oral communication ability and good listening skills.
The successful candidate will be creative, curious, and persistent. The candidate will be empathetic, compassionate, generous, and kind. The candidate will be a person of maturity, integrity, and high ethical standards.
The successful candidate will be able to accept a work schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and occasional national and international travel.
This position offers an annual salary of $100,000 to $120,000 and a competitive benefits package.
