Who We Are

The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashville (FUUN) a progressive, vibrant, welcoming presence in Nashville, TN seeks a Director of Music Ministry who is versed in a diverse range of musical styles, experienced in building a culture of singing, and interested in bringing creative energy and a vision to our music program. FUUN has traditionally had a strong program of both choral performance and congregational singing. We are looking forward to a new Director of Music Ministry who will challenge us, support us, and guide us as part of the ministry team.  Our community is part of the Unitarian Universalist tradition, one that is committed to the idea that people of different religious and spiritual beliefs can live in covenant with one another and work together for justice. We hope our new Director of Music Ministry will continue building the skills and confidence of our church choir and be excited about music as a way of bringing people together to support our mission and reflect our values. The Director of Music Ministry is considered a ministry team member. They are invited and expected to be creative, proactive, and engaged in developing and growing the musical, spiritual, and ethical lives of the congregation.  


Principal Duties:


Music and Worship

  • Leads the planning of music for all worship services, including hymns, choir anthems, instrumentals, and other music
  • Directs the Adult Choir and leads weekly choir rehearsals
  • Plans and prepares music for one “Music Sunday” per year (where music is the primary focus) and one Christmas Eve service
  • Coordinates music for member memorial services


Administrative Duties

  • Supervises pianist, contract musicians, and volunteers. 
  • Attends weekly staff meetings, monthly Worship Committee meetings, and other committee meetings as necessary
  • Submits budget requests and has accountability for the music program budget
  • Is responsible for instrument maintenance and storage
  • Drafts communications about the music program
  • Coordinates with Office staff to ensure licensing and copyright requirements are met


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Awareness and enthusiasm for the Unitarian Universalist tradition  
  • Familiarity with a broad range of repertoire and musical styles, both secular and religious 
  • Demonstrated ability to grow a music program
  • Understanding of vocal production and the teaching of singing and diction  
  • Experience leading choirs    
  • Ability to work with and engage diverse groups of musicians with a variety of skill levels
  • Familiarity with applicable copyright laws
  • Ability to lead congregational singing
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment to plan and implement worship services around a specific theme
  • Familiarity with recording technology and streaming platforms



Consideration will be given to  

  • Number of years of experience as a director of music ministry or choral director  
  • Relevant academic achievement  
  • Experience with Unitarian Universalist or other progressive, liberal congregations

Compensation and Benefits: 

Compensation: This position is part-time (20 hours/week). It includes 12 Sundays off annually and one week paid vacation. The proposed salary for this position is $30,000 and has been set according to UUA (Unitarian Universalist Association) Fair Compensation Guidelines. Modest professional expenses provided plus guest musician budget.
