Alex Nguyen is a baritone and choral conductor based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in Choral Conducting at Temple University as a student of Dr. Paul Rardin.
As a baritone, Nguyen sings with various choirs in the area including the Philadelphia Orchestra Symphonic Choir. In 2019, he performed as the tenor lead, Nobody, in Cal State Los Angeles’ production of the Christmas opera Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena.
In 2018, Nguyen made his conducting debut premiering his original work, “Music Changes You.” Since then, he has dedicated a majority of his time researching and conducting music from non-western traditions and communities. This has included research on Vietnamese vocal traditions such as ca dao, tết music, and quan họ. As a Vietnamese American, Nguyen is dedicated to ensuring equal representation in the choir room and on the podium.
Prior to studying at Temple, Alex lived in Los Angeles where he worked with community organizations such as the Academy of Special Dreams to promote special needs artistry and advocacy in the education system. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Choral Music Education from California State University, Los Angeles where he studied with Robert MacNeil, Donald Brinegar, and Dr. Christopher Gravis.
